How to save and access your files on the file server

The file server is a computer where you should save all files related to the lab. There are three different areas you will want to access on the file server. The first is your own volume, which is where you should store scripts, presentations, and other such items. The second is the data volume, where you should store the data that results from running experiments. The third is someone else’s Public folder, where someone might leave a file for you to pick up. These instructions will explain how to do all that and more!

Instructions for: Mac OS 9, Mac OS X

Instructions for Mac OS 9

  1. Open the Chooser

  1. Click on AppleShare

  1. Click on Server IP Address…

  1. Type cognation.stanford.edu and then type return

  1. Type in your name and password and then type return. (The first time you log in, your password is the same as your name. Please click Change Password… before typing return to change your password to something more mysterious).

  1. Click on the volume you want to access and then type return. This can be your name for your own volume, data for the data volume, or someone else’s name for that person’s Public folder. Don't check any of the boxes; they are evil.

  1. Close the Chooser

  1. The volume should pop up on the desktop. Open it.

 ->

  1. The first time you access your own volume, there will be a bunch of junk there. Feel free to delete it all (or keep it), except for the Public folder. Don’t delete that.

 ->

  1. You can copy any files you want to your volume and they will be accessible only by you. Any files which you want to be accessible to the lab should also go in your Public folder.

  1. To save experimental data, open the data volume. If a data file does not already exist for this experiment, you should simply copy the data file from the computer you ran the experiment on to the appropriate folder on the data volume. If the data file already exists, you have to append the new data to the old data that is on the server. The way to do this on a Mac is to open both files, copy the new data from the local file, paste it at the end of the remote file on the server, and save the remote file. Don’t copy all the data from the new file, just the data that is not already in the remote file. You can figure out which data is new by looking at the date and time of each experiment.

  1. When you’re done with a volume, drag it into the trash (this won’t erase anything).

Instructions for Mac OS X

  1. Switch to the Finder (clicking on a blank portion of your desktop will also switch you as well).

  1. Select "Go" then "Connect to Server" from the menu on top.

  1. A pop-up window appear. Enter "cognation.stanford.edu" in the "Server Address:" portion and hit return.

  1. Another window will pop-up. Enter your username and password and hit return.

  1. You will then have to choose which volume of the server you want to connect to.
    - connect to "data" to access or store experiment-related files
    - connect to "Users" if you want to access your own folder or someone else's public folder
    - connect to "software" if you need to get a certain piece of software

    If you need access to "website" for an online study, please speak to the lab manager in room 308

  1. Once you've selected which volume to connect to, it will pop-up on your desktop.

  1. To make a new folder on "data" for an experiment, select "File" then "New Folder" from the Finder menu at the top. This will create a new folder named "untitled" which you can then rename for your experiment.

  1. Once you are done with a volume, you should "unmount" it. You can do so by either clicking the Eject button near the volume's icon, or by holding the "Ctrl" key and clicking on the volume's icon on the desktop, then selecting "Eject ...".
